Library Trustees

trustees1library board

A Board of 9 elected trustees governs the Library System; during each odd numbered year, electors select 3 trustees for six-year terms. Each party may nominate up to two candidates for each election.

The Trustees are responsible, in consultation with the Library Director, for developing appropriate policies for overseeing the management of the System’s finances, purchasing, budgeting and accounting systems; maintenance of the buildings, interior and exterior, contents and the grounds, driveways and parking areas; hours and use of the premises by the public; developing a job description for the Library Director and evaluating the performance of the Library Director and staff; promoting gifting and other forms of private donation and fundraising; and advocating for the System to the public.

The Trustees meet at least 10 times per year, currently on the second Thursday evening of the month. In addition to attending Trustee meetings, each Trustee is expected to be active on at least one Committee. The committees established by the bylaws are: Finance, Program, and Governance. In addition, ad hoc committees (such as Strategic Planning) are formed as needed. Agendas and minutes of the Trustee Meetings and all Committee meetings are posted on the Town’s website. See www.easthaddam.org (Library Trustees tab under “Town Boards”) for a list of current Trustees and their terms, as well as minutes and agendas.

If you are passionate about our libraries and interested in running for Library Trustee in the future, we encourage you to attend one of our meetings. Contact Michael Gilroy (MGilroy@easthaddamlibrarysystem.org) and he will have a member of the Governance Committee get in contact with you. This Committee maintains a list of citizens interested in serving as Trustee and provides recommendations to the Town’s Political Parties to assist them in forming their candidate slates. Meanwhile, please consider joining one of the Friends organizations, as that is a great way to support the libraries and become familiar with programs and services.
